Business

From ice cream to cannabis. Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s and outspoken proponent for cannabis reform both personally and professionally, officially launched a nonprofit cannabis brand called Ben’s Best Blnz or B3.
The profits will be split between three organizations: 80% will be devoted for grants to Black cannabis entrepreneurs, 10% will be donated to the Vermont Racial Justice Alliance, a Black led racial justice organization whose mission is to secure sustainable power, ensure agency, and provide security for American Descendants of Slavery, while embracing their history and preserving their culture, and 10% will go to the Last Prisoner Project, the preeminent national organization working to decarcerate, expunge, and provide services to those who have been convicted of cannabis offenses.
“Our Mission is to sell Great Pot and use the power of our business to Right the Wrongs of the War on Drugs.”
The brand was built by Pentagram, a multi-disciplinary, independently owned design studio with offices in New York, London, Austin, and Berlin.

Alcohol trade association advocates for cannabis. In a letter to congressional leadership, the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) called for federal legalization and regulation of adult-use cannabis. The letter, which suggests the current federal system for alcohol regulation stands as a strong precedent, states:
The fact is cannabis legalization at the state level is here to stay, as evidenced by nearly a decade of new legalization efforts and no meaningful effort to undo them. Rather, the states that have legalized are expanding their markets and even discussing ways to begin interstate commerce of the product. Yet they receive no support from the federal government in determining how to ensure that products are safe or that the market is fair — especially as that market becomes increasingly national in scope. This is a stark contrast with alcohol, in which the U.S. Department of the Treasury, through the Tobacco, Tax, and Trade Bureau (TTB), not only collects taxes on the product, but also regulates the industry to ensure public health and fair market practices.
The group claims to be the first alcohol industry trade association to take public action on federal cannabis legalization. It has commented on the topic in the past.
Tech

Cannabis tech combo. Wholesale cannabis marketplace Leaf Trade announced this week its merger with Sweed, an all-in-one cannabis retail operating platform with point of sale (POS), inventory management, eCommerce, in-store kiosks, last-mile delivery, analytics, loyalty, marketing, and payments. The combined solution will provide a fully integrated, comprehensive technology suite for cannabis operators and become the industry’s only B2B2C offering on the market. The joint entity will serve largely MSO clients and dispensary groups with multiple locations.
