While there are no specific questions about cannabis in the 2022 Economic Census, options to select cannabis as a primary business activity are available to retail and wholesale establishments.
The survey looked at primary business activity in order to capture data for the most comprehensive measure of the U.S. economy. The inclusion of cannabis by a federal government agency is a positive step in the right direction for normalizing the industry.

Twilio ghosts on cannabis. Text messaging platform Twilio, one of the nationās largest communications providers for retailers, is banning cannabis companies from using its software to reach customers, according to a report from MJBizDaily.
Cannabis, CBD, Kratom, or drug paraphernalia product businesses are prohibited from utilizing SMS/MMS messaging on Twilio in the US and Canada, regardless of content. These restrictions apply regardless of the federal or state legality. All use cases for these are disallowed from sending SMS whether it contains cannabis content or not, even for 2FA purposes it is not permissible for such entities.
The publicly-traded company says the policy was put in place to comply with federal law, but comes as a clear blow to the industry already lacking support from mainstream technology companies.

Our ability to leverage our deep knowledge and experience in navigating the cannabis industryās complex regulatory environment has positioned Safe Harbor as an integral component for safely processing funds from legal operators into the banking system.
This comes as a major milestone for both the company and the industry at-large, as it waits for the SAFE Banking Act to pass. The long-debated bill continues to face bipartisan resistance.
