News

Out of bounds. An American basketball player in Indonesia was arrested earlier this month for allegedly smuggling 132 cannabis candies into the country. Jarred Dwayne Shaw, a native of Dallas, Texas, was detained after police raided his apartment just outside the capital of Jakarta following a tip from customs at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport that Shaw received a suspicious package from Thailand.
Indonesia enforces some of the world's strictest cannabis laws, and the airports police chief said Shaw could face up to life in prison or the death penalty if found guilty.
Shaw, a former college basketball player at Oklahoma State and Utah State, went undrafted in the 2014 NBA Draft and has been playing internationally since then, including in Indonesia since 2022.
He has since been dismissed from his current team, the Tangerang Hawks, and banned from the Indonesian Basketball League for breaching his contract.
A fellow American hoops star, Brittney Griner made headlines when she was arrested for cannabis possession at an airport in Moscow, Russia in 2022. She was later sentenced to 9 years in Russian prison, but eventually released as part of a controversial prisoner swap after being detained for nearly 10 months.

Buck the trend. In its 2025 report on delivery trends, online food ordering platform DoorDash highlighted the growing interest in hemp-derived THC products.
And as an alcohol alternative, some consumers are turning to hemp THC. From December 2024 to January 2025, DoorDash orders with hemp THC beverages grew 19% and orders with hemp THC edibles were up 15% — perhaps signaling that consumers are exploring new rituals during Dry January.
These findings align with an overall shift towards non-alcoholic beverages. A staggering 80% of alcohol delivery customers said they ordered low- or non-alcoholic drinks in the past six months, a figure that has more than doubled in the last year. Still, 32% feel there aren’t enough non-alcoholic options on menus.
